Release Notes

Sandbox 1.0

We’ve documented best we could the differences between the original Sandbox implementation and Sandbox for Movable Type. If you find additional additions or differences, please leave a comment noting the difference.

Caveat Emptor, a Few Differences in Implementation

  • When creating a folder you must create a page with a basename of “index” in that folder in order for the navigaiotn to function correctly. Wordpress does not have the concept of folders, thus this is a two-step process in Movable Type. (A future version of this plugin may prompt you to create or select a page to be the index page for a folder.)

Additions to Sandbox HTML in Movable Type

  • Comment dates are wrapped in abbr tag with iso8601 date
  • Because comments and trackback are different object types the id for individual TrackBacks is “trackback-ID#” instead of “comment-ID#”
  • Added class “comment-meta” to trackbacks to be more similar to comment markup
  • Added class “trackback-title” to <p> containing the title of the TrackBack
  • Captcha for un-authenticated comments (class “comment-captcha”)
  • Added rel next and prev category links to html head
  • Additional archive types are available: author-date-based and category-date-based entry listings.
  • Archives page lists “Archives by Author”
  • Reply-to-comment (specifying parent comment) adds a bit of html to the comment form and to the comment author line.
  • Added hAtom for author name on Author archives

Differences in Sandbox on Movable Type vs. WordPress

  • The comments form has additional elements for handling reply-comments and captchas, if enabled.
  • <$mt:EntryBody$> and <$mt:EntryMore$> are both included in the entry detail
  • Unauthenticated commenters info is baked into cookie by default to mimic WP behaviour.
  • The archive page in MT is an index template and doesn’t require the use of a special page template as in WP. The markup has been preserved such that all themes will still apply correct markup.
  • MT has the ability to preview comments built in, thus in addition to a submit button there is a comment button to style. If the css is styling the button via the id styles, then it will need to be updated to refer to the id comment-submit. The preview button can be styled using the id comment-preview.
  • MT doesn’t have the ability to remove the current category when viewing an entry on a category index page. A feature request for this has been submitted to Six Apart: http://bugs.movabletype.org/default.asp?80604
  • No “description” field to author profile for use on the Author Archives, this can be added via CustomFields.
  • Links (or Blogroll) is not a core feature of MT, but a page or plugin may be used to provide this functionality.
  • In the comment form, the fields for author, email, and url are wrapped in a div in order to hide these fields for authenticated users.
  • Because of the way the MT javascript handles login on the static page, the <p> elements with the id “login” and “comment-notes” are both rendered inside a <div> with the id of “commenter-greeting”. This <div> is placed outside the comment form which is hidden via javascript if the user is not logged in. The above display of the various greeting messages appear in the same order, however they are not nested in the comment form.
  • Password protected posts/entries is not yet a feature of MT.
  • No edit links on published entries, but this feature will be added in a future release.
  • Edit template links in pages produced by that template is not yet a feature of MT Case 81831
  • Publishing pages for Attachments (aka Assets) are not yet a feature of MT.

If you find additional additions or differences, please leave a comment noting the difference.

    Beau,

Now that MT is moving more to a community style cms system, are you planning to update Sandbox?

It’s a nice clean template, and would like to use it with the friending/voting capabilities.

    Cheers, David K.

Good question David. I think that’s a great idea.

The first release was focused around parody with the original template set to take advantage of the themes that existed for Sandbox. Because these new community features would require additional markup and features, they wouldn’t be styled by the existing themes. So it would be smart to create a new template set branched from the existing template set. It might be called “Sandbox + Community”, “Community Sandbox”, or perhaps “Playground” :)

Would you be interested in helping with the integration of community features into Sandbox?
